Building lights no longer show a 'cross' - Chow
The Penang CM says he is still awaiting a report from the state secretary, on the apartment which courted controversy.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said an apartment in Jelutong which created controversy with its lighting is no longer showing a "cross".
"I was sent a picture of the building taken last night and, based on the photo, there was no more 'cross' and only the carpark lights were on," Chow said at a press conference in Komtar today.
According to photos posted by several netizens on social media, the building lights now mimic the Chinese word "Ong", meaning prosperity.
Earlier the lights had caused a stir in the local community, with Penang Mufti Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor urging the local authorities to resolve the issue.
A police report had also been lodged over the matter by a group upset with the image.
However, Chow said he is still awaiting a report on the building from state secretary Farizan Darus.
Malaysiakini has contacted Farizan, but he is not available for comment.
Chow had earlier said that the apartment built by a private developer had yet to acquire a certificate of completion and compliance (CCC).
According to Chow, the developer was then testing the facilities, including the lighting system.
Chow confirmed that the building is not a church or place of worship, but a private apartment block.
