Shot labourer: Suhakam wants Mindef to explain

The Malaysian Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) is seeking an urgent meeting with Defence Minister Najib Razak to discuss the alleged shooting of a 25-year-old labourer by army personnel last month.

Suhakam commissioner Abdul Munir Yaakob saids this at Suhakam's headquarters in Kuala Lumpur after receiving a memorandum on Dec 5 incident from Keadilan Youth deputy chief M Manikavasagam.
"We have received complaints about police misconduct before, but I believe this is the first time Suhakam receives a complaint regarding the military," said Abdul Munir.
Abdul Munir said that the matter will be brought up during the commissioner's next meeting.
Victim Mohd Ridzuan Mat Nor Ridzuan claims that he and a friend were walking past an army supply depot near Jalan Kuching in Kuala Lumpur at 5am when they stumbled upon telephone wires in front of the camp and attempted to collect it for scrap.
Two individuals whom he described as army personnel then showed up and fired three shots in their direction, forcing the duo to flee.
He said the gunmen caught up with him and fired a shot to his left leg near the knee, and another two shots to his right leg. He claims he was left sprawling in a pool of blood for four hours before he was taken to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
Hospital fees
Relating the incident to Abdul Munir today, Ridzuan said, "I don't even know what my crime is,"
At hospital, his ordeal continued. Doctors told him he might never walk again and he was remanded for 12 days, allegedly for trespassing at an army camp.
Ridzuan's elder sister, Rosni, who was also present, told Abdul Munir that metal plates had to be placed in both of Ridzuan's legs to accelerate his healing.
"A plate for one leg costs RM1,000. We can't even afford one plate, let alone two. The doctor then took out both plates. How are his legs supposed to heal?"asked Rosni, 40, who works as a clerk.
She added that Ridzuan was supporting their ailing father and earned only RM30 a day.
"We want justice for my brother. That's all. He was shot like an animal. He should be compensated as he might never be able to walk again," she said.
Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Information Chief Tian Chua at a press conference after the memorandum handover said that the party would provide legal assistance if Ridzuan took the matter to the courts.
"We will first give time for the defence ministry to explain the matter. PKR is willing to absorb the cost of legal proceedings later, if necessary, as we understand Ridzuan's family cannot afford a costly legal battle," he said.
