There have been 325 cases of corruption in the public and private sectors in Penang since November 2018, state secretary Farizan Darus said today.
According to him, these cases included individuals from government-linked companies, NGOs and politicians.
Speaking at the civil servants monthly meeting in Komtar, Farizan added that 35 percent of the corruption cases involved the civil service.
"It is frightening that 115 of the cases involved the civil service.
"This is a worrying trend. One way of addressing this problem is to review the standard operating procedures and to eliminate the spaces that allow corruption to breed," he told a hall packed with civil servants.
According to Farizan, the breakdown of the 325 corruption cases were 68 cases of receiving bribes; offering bribes (seven cases); false claims (14); abuse of position and power for gratification (37); money laundering (three), and others (196).
"Another way to address the issue of corruption is to reduce red tape and to speed up the providing of services to the public," he said.
Farizan said his department was committed to fighting corruption and would work closely with the MACC on this.
