A renegade police officer who led a raid on a police camp that left 14 people dead in 1989 has been repatriated to the Philippines from Malaysia, police said.

Rizal Ali fled to Malaysia in the early 1990s after leading a small band of disgruntled policemen and soldiers who took over a police camp in the southern port city of Zamboanga 16 years ago.

The siege was triggered by a feud between Ali and his superiors and resulted in the deaths of 12 of his supporters and two hostages.

Ali eluded a massive manhunt but was arrested in Malaysia and convicted for illegal possession of weapons. He served eight of his 14-year jail term there before being released and repatriated on Saturday.

National police chief Arturo Lomibao said the 60-year-old Ali will be flown back to Zamboanga to stand trial for the siege.

"He is charged with multiple murder for the siege," Lomibao said.
