Integrity. This must be the keyword in Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's new cabinet, according to opposition leader Lim Kit Siang.
In a statement today, the Ipoh Timor parliamentarian said the long and overdue cabinet reshuffle appeared imminent.
"Nobody can rule out the possibility that when Abdullah chairs his first cabinet meeting for the new year next Wednesday, it would not be a reshuffled cabinet," he added.
"But will it be an integrity cabinet?" he asked.
Lim also questioned if the premier was prepared to boldly proclaim that integrity would be the underlying theme of his new cabinet.
"Never before in the nation's history has so much of the people's hopes for change been invested in the imminent cabinet reshuffle," he noted.
According to the opposition leader the cabinet must be a downsized version, nimble, lean and super efficient.
On the same note, he warned that if it failed to kick-start the integrity pledges and programmes stalled for more than two years, "there goes the legacy of Abdullah as the fifth prime minister".
For Malaysians would then have little basis for hope that great things could be expected under Abdullah's stewardship, he added.
No grace period
The new cabinet, Lim pointed out, would not have the traditional 100 days to prove its worth. "It must hit the ground running and produce result in the first month".
"Malaysians have been waiting for the delivery of the pledges and programmes of integrity for more than two years.
"In the past two years, Abdullah has very little to show in action and results and he had remained the lone voice in the cabinet and government for integrity," he said.
Not a single minister was prepared to give full backing to the prime minister by spearheading a ministerial shake-up to convince Malaysians that integrity and reform are not empty words, he added.
"The important question Abdullah must bear in mind when deciding on his new cabinet is - what is the use of having an Integrity Institute of Malaysia (IIM) when there is no Integrity Cabinet (IC)?"
