More than 2,000 evacuees in flood-hit Kelantan are still taking shelter in the relief centres and relatives' homes as the situation nin the state remained unchanged this morning.

Bernama quoted a Kelantan police flood operations room spokesman as saying that the majority of the evacuees were from several villages in Pasir Mas where the Sungai Golok level in Rantau Panjang was still above the danger point.

The situation in places like Machang and Jeli was improving with all the evacuees having returned home, he said.

As at 9am, 2,879 evacuees - 2,667 in Pasir Mas and the rest in Tanah Merah -- were still at the relief centres and relatives' homes.

The spokesman said the Sungai Golok level had dropped slightly to 10.21m but still exceeded the danger level of 9m although the levels of the other main rivers in the state were receding due to the fine weather yesterday.

Boy drowned, four still missing

A six-year-old boy drowned while playing with his friends in floodwaters in Tanah Merah near Kota Bharu yesterday afternoon.

In Kedah yesterday, at least three people have been killed and four rescue workers are missing in severe floods in the northern states which have forced thousands of people to be evacuated.

The rescue workers were swept away by fast currents when the boat they were travelling in overturned in Kedah. Search and rescue operations for the four are ongoing and their fate is still unknown.

Two-thirds of Perlis were inundated yesterday and 16,000 people had been relocated to 113 evacuation centres in the state and Kedah.

The floods this year are believed to be the worst in 30 years.

Deputy Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak visited the two states yesterday and promised immediate relief to the affected victims.
