The Kelantan government is considering various public places to carry out the syariah punishment of caning, and among them is a stadium, according to Kelantan Menteri Besar Ahmad Yakob.

Ahmad said this was made possible following the passing of an amendment to the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Procedure Enactment 2002 last year, which now allows for caning to be carried out in public.

"It will allow us to carry out public caning and we are looking at gazetting it.

"Among the suggestions (on where to carry out the caning) were in a closed hall, within the compound of a mosque or a stadium," Ahmad told journalists after attending an event in Kota Bharu today.

This comes amid international outrage over the Terengganu government's move on Monday to cane a lesbian couple in public, including the presence of the media.

Syariah law falls under the ambit of state governments.
