Two separate Sessions Courts in Kuala Lumpur today acquitted former Padang Serai MP N Surendran and Sarawak activist Lawrence Jeyaraj for sedition in relation to their comments on Anwar Ibrahim's Sodomy II conviction.

Surendran was acquitted by judge Emilia Kaswati Mohamad Khalid after deputy public prosecutor Asyraf Zubir Mohd Zain informed the court that the prosecution did not want to proceed with the case.

This came despite the former lawmaker not having submitted a representation letter and the Court of Appeal being scheduled to deliver its decision on the challenge to the charge on Sept 3.

Surendran was charged for his comments on the judiciary after Anwar's acquittal was overturned by the Court of Appeal in 2014.

He was represented by Latheefa Koya and Eric Paulsen.

Lawrence, meanwhile, was acquitted after Surendran informed judge Rohatul Akmar Abdullah of his own acquittal and briefed her on the other related sedition cases involving Paulsen and political cartoonist Zunar.

Lawrence was charged for comments he posted on Facebook in relation to Anwar's conviction and sentencing by the Federal Court in 2015.

The car salesman thanked his lawyers for representing him and called for a repeal of the Sedition Act 1949.

Echoing his sentiments, Surendran said his criticism of the 2014 Court of Appeal decision had led to many others being charged.

"The people responsible for instituting the charges are scot-free and this includes former attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail and this was during Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's time as the home minister.

"The new government has to explain what action would be taken against them for abuse of power by using the AG's Chambers, and also the police, to institute charges against us.

"For me, I had been victimised by the chambers for four years as I was charged about the same time on Aug 28, 2014," he said.

Surendran said he was charged merely as being Anwar's lawyer and for questioning the decision made by the Court of Appeal.

This was Surendran's second acquittal for sedition. On July 30, he was granted a discharge and an acquittal for releasing an allegedly seditious press statement titled "Court of Appeal's Fitnah 2 written judgment is flawed, defensive and insupportable".
