Dewan Rakyat speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof said the proposal to make the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) hearing open to the public can be considered on a case by case basis.

"It depends from case to case... we go on the basis of transparency to the extent possible," he told Malaysiakini.

Ariff was asked to respond to newly-minted PAC chairperson Ronald Kiandee's proposal to amend the parliamentary Standing Orders to allow PAC hearings to be conducted in the open.

At present, the Standing Order does not allow the contents of any parliamentary committee proceedings to be publicised until after a report is produced and only if it is tabled in Parliament.

Kiandee, who is also BN's Beluran MP, had also proposed that all PAC reports are tabled in Parliament and allocated a time for debate.

Ariff said the proposal was "very good".

However, he said pushing for it will depend on Kiandee.

"Well, he's the PAC chairperson. We'll see how it goes. It's good," he said.
