Two more people have died in floods which hit the country's northeast states, raising the death toll to five, but authorities said today the situation had improved.

The latest victims were two boys - Abdul Azim Fahmi Mohd Fauzi, eight, and Wan Mohd Faizul Wan Suibon, 14, who fell into swollen rivers in separate incidents and were swept away by strong currents.

Wan Mohd Faizul's body was recovered but the search was continuing for Abdul Azim, the official Bernama news agency said.

The head of public order and traffic for Terengganu state Farid Mahmud said only 125 families or some 648 people remained in evacuation centres in the coastal district of Kemaman.

More than 1,000 people were evacuated from Terengganu and Kelantan as well as central Pahang which borders the other two states early this week.

"The water in the main rivers exceeded the danger level last night but has now subsided as the rain has stopped and the weather has been clear since last night," Farid added.

A meteorological department spokesman told AFP today that the heavy rains that hit the Kelantan and Terengganu earlier this week had stopped and that only intermittent rainfall was expected over the next few days.
