Umno will field supreme council member Lokman Adam Mohd Noor in the Sungai Kandis by-election.

This was confirmed by Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan at a press conference in Shah Alam today.

Following the 14th general election, Lokman had become known for organising rallies in solidarity with former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak, and against the Pakatan Harapan government.

Speaking to Malaysiakini, Lokman said the Sungai Kandis by-election is a chance for the people to show whether they agree with Harapan's policies and actions.

"This isn't about choosing who will govern Selangor as that will remain under Harapan, but this election is a chance for the people to state whether they agree with what has happened in this country," he said.

This includes whether Harapan had fulfilled its manifesto or belittled it, whether the positions of Islam and Malays have been undermined.

Lokman, who leads the Pemantau Malaysia Baru NGO, said if he were to be voted in, he would monitor whether Harapan keeps to its promises made. 

Since BN was defeated in the May 9 general election, Lokman has emerged as a staunch supporter of the coalition's former chairperson and former prime minister Najib, and a vocal critic of the Pakatan Harapan government. 

Earlier this week, he led a protest (photo)near Bukit Aman, when the Yang di-Pertuang Agong was officiating the first session of the 14th Parliament sitting. 

Lokman said the voters of Sungai Kandis should support him if they don't want the rights of Malays and Muslims, as well as that of the Malay rulers, to be eroded further. 

"If they (the voters) want me to continue voicing out their grievances through my NGO, they should vote for me," he said. 

The by-election for the Sungai Kandis state seat comes following the passing of its former incumbent Shuhaimi Shafiei on July 2, due to lymphoma.

The nomination day takes place tomorrow while the polling date is Aug 4. 

PKR last night named tahfiz school headmaster Zawawi Mughni, 48, as its candidate for the seat.

On May 9, PKR's Mat Shuhaimi obtained 23,998 votes to win the Malay-majority seat, defeating BN's Kamaruzzaman Johar (11,518 votes), PAS' Mohd Yusof Abdullah (7,573) and PRM's Hanafiah Husin (76).
