Police will re-open an investigation into the murder of Mongolian national Altantuya Shaaribuu, said inspector-general of police Mohamad Fuzi Harun.

"Police will conduct the investigation and refer it to the deputy public prosecutor," he told Malaysiakini this afternoon.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Zainuddin Yaacob confirmed that Altantuya's father Shaaribuu Setev had lodged a report with the Dang Wangi district police headquarters yesterday.

Zainuddin said police have also recorded a statement from Setev, who has met with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and attorney-general Tommy Thomas, this morning.

Altantuya, 28, was murdered on a secluded hill in Puncak Alam in 2006 by two police officers Inspector Azilah Hadri and Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar.

She was shot twice in the head and her body was wrapped in military grade explosives before being blown up.

Both police officers were convicted of the murder in 2009 and sentenced to hang. The motive behind the murder was never established.

They were later released when an appeals court in 2013 overturned the conviction ruling the High Court judge had erred.

The Federal Court, however, upheld their death sentences in 2015. By then, Sirul had already fled Australia.

Sirul has been held at an immigration detention centre in Sydney for the past three years.

Last month, he had expressed his willingness to reveal more regarding the incident to the Malaysian government in exchange for amnesty.

Altantuya was alleged the former lover of Abdul Razak Baginda, who is, in turn, the former confidante of former premier Najib Abdul Razak.

On Tuesday, Setev and the family's lawyer Ramkarpal Singh had a meeting with Attorney-General Tommy Thomas in Putrajaya.

Ramkarpal told reporters that they have new leads which can be used for further investigations, without divulging further details
