The Institutional Reforms Committee (IRC) has submitted seven recommendations to the Council of Eminent Persons (CEP) so far.

“We have given seven immediate recommendations,” IRC member Ambiga Sreenevasan (above) told reporters after briefing the CEP at Ilham Tower in Kuala Lumpur today.

The recommendations were included in the third report from the IRC to the CEP, said Mah Weng Kwai, another member of the IRC.

Today’s report to the CEP is their fourth while their final one will be submitted on July 15, Mah said.

“The final report will be a holistic report where all the recommendations and details will be given,” he said.

Ambiga said their full recommendations will outline those which are immediate, mid-term as well as long-term.

"By July 15, we can tell you the sum total of the recommendations," she said.

The IRC, Ambiga clarified, was not looking at specific individuals but at reforming the entire structure of the institutions.

Aside from the seven immediate recommendations, the IRC's reports to the CEP also include what the committee has been doing and who they have met.

'Good ideas'

Mah said thus far, the IRC has received thousands of suggestions from the Malaysian public.

"Our job has been made much easier because of the positivity that we see from everyone who has come and talked to us.

"Everybody has good ideas and they want to move forward from the bad situation we were in previously," he said.

The IRC was set up a day after the formation of the CEP following the general election and they were given a 60-day deadline to propose recommendations on institutional reforms to the CEP.

The committee consists of National Human Rights Society (Hakam) chairperson Ambiga, retired Court of Appeal judge and Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) commissioner Mah as well as retired Court of Appeal judge KC Vohrah, Persatuan Patriot Kebangsaan (Patriot) president and retired brigadier-general Mohd Arshad Raji and Universiti Malaya law professor Shad Saleem Faruqi.
