Kelantan Umno chief Mustapa Mohamed is unsure whether he should contest for the Umno presidency.

"I am not sure. Some people are encouraging me. I need a lot of support, I have to go campaigning, I have to travel including to Sabah," Mustapa was quoted as saying by The Star.

On whether he would contest other posts in Umno, the former international trade and industry minister said he would only decide on June 17, the final day for party polls nominations.

"I will let you know if I decide to do so. I will register on June 17," he said.

On June 1, a group of youths had urged Mustapa to go for the presidency to steer Umno away from "elites" and bring it back closer to the people on the ground.

Currently, the only candidate for the Umno president post is former deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Zahid had assumed control of Umno's leadership after former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak resigned.

Besides Mustapa, another name being floated as a potential Umno presidential candidate is fellow Kelantanese and Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.
