Former deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim will campaign for PAS ahead of the Pengkalan Pasir by-election on Dec 6.

"Anwar will be in Kelantan before nomination day (on Nov 27). He will definitely garner support for PAS," said Parti Keadilan Rakyat (Keadilan) information chief Tian Chua.

Chua said this would be Anwar's first political activity since his release from jail in September last year after being convicted for corrupt practice and sodomy respectively.

The sodomy charge was overturned on appeal, bu Anwar is banned from participating in politics until April 2008 due to the earlier conviction.

"Anwar will participate in public lectures and will press the need for a strong opposition to bring about much needed reforms in the government," he said.

Chua said the by-election is expected to see a two-way fight between PAS and Umno, the dominant party in Barisan Nasional.

PAS now narrowly controls Kelantan's state assembly with 23 seats compared to the 21 seats held by BN.

The Pengkalan Pasir state seat fell vacant after the death of Wan Abdul Aziz Wan Jaafar from liver cancer on Oct 31.- AFP
