MACC chief commissioner Mohd Shukri Abdull revealed how the commission's officers had met an unnamed prince in Saudi Arabia, who confirmed donating the US$681 million (often referred to as RM2.6 billion) to former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.
“He (the prince) admitted, 'Yes, we donated RM2.6 billion'.
"But when we asked for supporting documents, he couldn't produce any," he told a press conference at MACC's headquarters in Putrajaya today.
Shukri was responding to a question on MACC's statement in August 2015, which confirmed that the sum was a political donation, and dismissed that it was from 1MDB.
Najib's administration insisted it was a donation but the US Department of Justice (DOJ) claimed that the US$681 million was diverted from 1MDB.
Quizzed on DOJ's claims, Shukri said: "The MACC and DOJ's findings are almost similar."
Meanwhile, Shukri said the MACC has a close working relationship with other anti-graft and law enforcement agencies abroad.
He said with a new person in charge of the Attorney-General's Chambers, the commission will be requesting for mutual legal assistance (MLA) to assist with their probes.
The MACC is investigating Najib over a transfer of RM42 million from SRC International into his private account.
The RM2.6 billion scandal, meanwhile, is being investigated by a special 1MDB taskforce.
