Former Special Branch (SB) deputy director Abdul Hamid Bador may be making a comeback to head the police's intelligence unit.

Bukit Aman Special Branch director Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff's contract is expected to expire in September and Hamid is tipped to replace him, according to the Malay Mail.

Hamid was on Aug 19, 2015, transferred to the Prime Minister's Department.

Hamid, who had been with the police force for 37 years at that time, was livid and accused the government of transferring him over the 1MDB matter. 

His transfer came a month after then attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail was dismissed.

Gani has revealed that he was planning to charge former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak for alleged criminal wrongdoing.

The MACC had investigated Najib over the multi-billion ringgit deposits in his personal bank account as well as deposits from SRC International Sdn Bhd, a former 1MDB subsidiary.

Several MACC officers involved in the investigation were subsequently arrested while others transferred.

Gani's replacement Mohamed Apandi Ali in 2016 cleared Najib of all wrongdoing.

It will not be the first instance if Hamid returns to lead the Special Branch.

Former MACC deputy commissioner Mohd Shukri Abdull returned as the MACC chief after going into early retirement amid attempts to block the 1MDB investigation.

International investigations claimed the multi-billion ringgit deposits in Najib's account originated from 1MDB.

Najib claimed the money was a donation from a Saudi patron and denied wrongdoing or taking public funds for personal gain.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had sought to bring back and promote former investigators in the 1MDB matter.

This was after Mahathir led Pakatan Harapan to defeat Najib's BN, ending the coalition's 61 years in power since independence.

Mahathir had accused several heads of agencies appointed by Najib of being complicit in covering up the 1MDB scandal.
