GE14 | Heavy rain and thunderstorms disrupted campaigning for the 14th general election in northern peninsula Malaysia today.

In Penang this morning, MCA and Gerakan candidates were to have a walkabout at Anson Road market at 8am.

However, a heavy downpour which began at 7am, continued until 9am.

Gerakan's Tanjong candidate Ng Siew Lai and MCA's Padang Kota candidate Lim Swee Bok later only spent 10 minutes at the market before deciding to canvass for support at nearby apartments after the rain had stopped.

Elsewhere in Penang, heavy rain was reported from 6.30am till noon.

Over in Kedah, heavy rain and strong winds threatened to dampen Alor Setar Umno's Jualan Harga Runtuh program at the Pertubuhan Peladang Kawasan Tun Adam Malik, which was supposed to begin at 8am today.

Some 20 people sought shelter under canopies and buildings when a storm hit that morning, and some of the canopies were lowered or partly dismantled out of concern that the wind would topple it over.

However the canopies were set up again at as soon as the wind dissipated and the rain slowed to a drizzle at about 8.40am, and the event was in full swing with people streaming in and out to buy discounted groceries by 9am although it was still raining.

Down south in Johor, heavy rains also poured in Pagoh and Yong Peng in the afternoon.

However, the bad weather did not reportedly affect any planned events.
