GE14 | Caretaker prime minister Najib Abdul Razak said he was "reasonably sanguine" on BN's chances in the upcoming polls and expected "better results".

In an interview with Bloomberg, Najib said he did not see the likelihood of a change in government or a landslide BN victory.

"We are reasonably confident of a good result... There is no movement for changing the government, I don't see that.

"That's not saying we will win with a huge majority, no I am not going to predict that, but I am going to say that we are reasonably sanguine about the result."

Najib, 64, has led BN since April 2009 but his first test at the polls in 2013 saw the coalition winning slightly fewer seats in Parliament than in 2008.

Chinese less motivated now

In his first interview with a foreign news agency in three years, Najib told Bloomberg that the main opposition bloc Pakatan Harapan would flounder without an alliance with PAS, unlike in 2013.

He also predicted that Chinese voters are less motivated to back the opposition, unlike before.

"Now today, they know it's not possible (to change government)," Najib said. "So I think that euphoria has receded to a great extent."

Najib said BN would be focussing their campaign on Sarawak, Sabah, Kedah and Johor which were strongly behind his coalition in 2013.

The report noted that these states delivered about a third of BN's seats in 2013.
