GE14 | Alor Gajah, the parliamentary seat which MCA won with the largest majority in the last polls, may no longer be as safe as it was.

BN today confirmed that the caretaker prime minister's political secretary Wong Nai Chee will be fielded in Alor Gajah to the chagrin of incumbent Koh Nai Kwong's supporters.

The Facebook page ‘Only Vote for KNK’, which was set up to lobby for Koh to be retained in Alor Gajah, apologised for its unsuccessful bid.

"Sorry to the people of Alor Gajah. We were not able to keep Koh as the candidate for P135 Alor Gajah," it said.

Koh was instead fielded in the state seat of Machap Jaya, which MCA won by a razor-thin 152-vote majority in the last general election.

‘Let BN lose’

The Facebook comments largely expressed sadness, but some also threatened to punish BN for supposedly not listening to grassroots demands.

"We will still support Koh in Machap Jaya but in Alor Gajah... let BN lose badly there," said one commenter.

Another said: “This is the time for us to sign a signal to the top leadership that they should not act on a whim or take advantage of voters' loyalty."

The administrator of the "Only Vote for KNK" Facebook page then replied: "We will show the power of voters." The page has more than 1,000 followers.

DAP, which had contested and lost Alor Gajah in the last three terms, has ceded the Malay-majority seat to Bersatu.

DAP national organising secretary Anthony Loke believes that the Malay party would be able to better appeal to voters there.

Bersatu will field its Malacca chief Mohd Redzuan Yusof in the seat, which comprises 59 percent Malays, 28 percent Chinese and 13 percent Indians, as of 2013.

While the Bersatu factor and possible grassroots discontent may work against MCA, Pakatan Harapan still face an uphill battle in Alor Gajah.

Koh had won the Alor Gajah parliamentary seat by 11,597 votes in the last general election, the largest majority of the seven parliamentary seats MCA won.

Furthermore, the headwinds against MCA in Alor Gajah could be counteracted with PAS entering the fray, thereby possibly splitting opposition votes.

PAS has announced that it will field its Alor Gajah coordinator Mohammad Nazree Mohammad Aris in the seat.
