GE14 | The Election Commission has no objections to Pakatan Harapan contesting under the PKR logo in the 14th general election.
Bernama quoted EC chief Mohd Hashim Abdullah as saying he had made it clear that candidates who want to contest using the PKR logo only need the party's consent, not the EC's.
Harapan had decided to use the PKR 'eye' symbol as its common logo after it failed to register the coalition with the Registrar of Societies.
However, Hashim pointed out that any political party contesting in the election must be a registered body under the Societies Act 1966 to carry out any activities.
According to Hashim, a party wishing to allow a candidate contest with its logo is required to issue a consent letter, which must be signed by the party's official.
Any candidate who does not receive the written consent but is eligible to contest will be provided with an existing symbol, he added.
“As long as all the conditions are complied with, the individual is eligible to represent any party that has given him or her written permission,” he said, adding that there was no provision stating that only members could represent a particular party in the general election.
Hashim said the EC would issue rules and guidelines on the use of logos and campaign materials in the near future for the benefit of all stakeholders.
In a response, PKR welcomed EC's announcement.
The party's communication director Fahmi Fadzil, in a statement, reiterated the party's readiness to allow all Harapan candidates contesting in GE14, to use PKR's logo.
"This is based on the loyalty and unity between all Harapan component parties working towards a better Malaysia," he said.
