GE14 | Police nabbed three individuals for allegedly taking down 133 BN flags in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

According to Kuala Lumpur police chief Mazlan Lazim, the three women took down the flags along Jalan Leong Yew Koh, put them in plastic bags, and brought them to the nearby police station. 

Police found that three women – one Malay, one Chinese, one Indian – had with in their vehicles pliers, wire cutters, scissors and mosquito repellent. 

"Our investigations have found that the three women are TTDI residents, and not involved in any political parties. 

"They acted out of their own sense of civic duty, claiming that no action was taken after they made complaints to local authorities about the flags going up before April 28 (normination day)," he said in a statement today.

The three were brought to the Jinjang Centralised Lock-Up Centre last night, and are expected to be remanded for investigation under Section 427 of the Penal Code.

Section 427 carries a maximum prison sentence of five years.

Mazlan also urged the public to report any election offences to the relevant authorities, and not take the law into their own hands.

This is the second arrest in Taman Tun Dr Ismail this week, after police nabbed a man three days ago for the same offence.

The man was recorded pulling out BN flags along a pavement and throwing them to the ground, in a video that later went viral on social media.

In the video, the man also flashes his middle finger at the person recording him, before he continues pulling out flags. 

Mazlan had previously clarified that the putting up of political party flags before the 14th general election campaign period – between April 28 and polling day, May 9 – falls under the jurisdiction of local councils.
