Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar today formally announced his entry into Amanah, a PAS splinter party.

His announcement came three months after being an independent MP due to the termination of his 34-year membership with PAS.

"I would like to announce that my time as an independent MP is over, and I will be joining Amanah to be with my friends in Pakatan Harapan in bringing about change," Mahfuz said.

He made the announcement at a ceremony in Parliament attended by Harapan MPs.

Mahfuz at one time held the position of vice-president in PAS.

He was sidelined after ultra-conservatives took control of the party in 2015.

Several senior PAS figures who were ousted by the new leadership quit the party and later formed Amanah.

However, Mahfuz chose to stay with PAS, and became a dissenting voice within the party.

He finally quit the party in December last year.

Mahfuz's departure from PAS was not well-received by his party, with his president Abdul Hadi Awang dismissing it by saying "Mahfuz was long dead, but just buried."
