Student activist Khairul Anuar Ahmad Zainuddin, who was released from his detention under the Internal Security Act last Saturday, has been allowed to resume his studies at the Institut Kemahiran Mara (IKM).

According to a close family member, Khairul Anuar would be resuming classes for his electrical engineering course on Monday.

The second-year student was expelled from IKM's Petaling Jaya campus on July 9, just four days after he was arrested under the ISA, which allows for detention without trial.

Khairul Anuar was released at 1.30pm last Saturday after being detained for 23 days to assist in police investigations.

According to the family member, his return to IKM was approved following a meeting with Entrepreneur Development Minister Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz today at 3pm.

Appeal letter sent

Meanwhile, University of Malaya's (UM) Student Representative Council president Mohd Fuad Mohd Ikhwan, who was reported to have been automatically expelled following his arrest under the ISA, has sent an appeal letter to the Education minister.

"The letter addressed to the Education minister, which appeals to him to allow me to continue my studies in UM, has been sent via his deputy," Mohd Fuad said when contacted by malaysiakini this afternoon.

Mohd Fuad was arrested on July 6, a day after Khairul Anuar was held, and released on July 16.

In a separate development, four students from Universiti Sains Malaysia's (USM) Chinese Language Society were fined RM150 each after being found guilty of participating in a debate in Singapore.

The students were not given prior permission by USM authorities to attend the inter-varsity debate between Singaporean and Malaysia universities held last May.
