Namewee has been detained by the police to facilitate investigations into his "Like a Dog" video.

The administrator of the controversial rapper's Facebook page posted a statement that Namewee had been "officially arrested."

"We will continue to cooperate with the police for investigation. Thanks for your continuous support. Let's pray and hope that Namewee will be released tomorrow," read the message.

Earlier today, Namewee had posted a photo of him outside the Bukit Aman police headquarters, saying he was there to give his statement.

He said he was not afraid as he believed Malaysia "still has justice. "

Inspector-general of police Mohamad Fuzi Harun had previously said that Namewee was being investigated under Section 298A of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, over the video released in conjunction with 2018 as the Year of the Dog according to the Chinese lunar calendar, which allegedly offended the feelings and sensitivities of Malaysia's multi-cultural community.

Namewee had said that the music video only served to entertain and that it was shot by the side of the main road in Putrajaya, and not within the vicinity of any mosques as claimed by certain quarters.

In a statement later in the evening, Bukit Aman CID chief Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd confirmed the arrest of Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, 34, about 2.45pm. 

He said the arrest was made following four police reports against the video, which allegedly "insulted religion and causes negative implications on racial unity and harmony."
