Jailed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, who is currently serving a five-year jail term on a sodomy conviction, is expected to be freed on June 11. 

"Insya Allah, according to the law, he will be freed on June 11," Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail told 1,000 women delegates at the Pakatan Harapan Women convention held at Kajang today. 

"Today is the 1,602nd day he became political detainee," the Harapan president said, adding that although he is in prison, his spirit was still with the opposition coalition. 

Anwar was convicted of sodomy for the second time in 2014, a charge he claims is politically motivated, with the Federal Court upholding his five-year sentence in Feb 2015. The sentence is being cut short for good behaviour. 

It was previously reported that Harapan would nominate Dr Mahathir Mohamad as interim prime minister, and Wan Azizah as his deputy, until Anwar becomes eligible to contest in an election. 

Sources later told Malaysiakini that although PKR was fixed on the idea of an interim leader, the other Harapan component parties disagreed with the idea, noting that the term does not convey stability. 

The opposition coalition was initially expected to announce its candidates for the top two posts in its national convention tomorrow.

But at a press conference after the Harapan presidential council meeting last night, Mahathir provided conflicting answers - saying that the announcement would either be made at the convention, or after. 

Wan Azizah also stressed today that there is no internal crisis within PKR over the nomination of Mahathir as PM candidate, and even added that "a woman can also become the candidate."
