A former DAP assemblyperson has joined the People's Alternative Party (PAP), becoming the Penang state liaison committee chief.

In a press conference in Jawi, Tan Beng Huat said he left DAP as the party no longer prioritises its ideology.

"The party forgets its veteran leaders and have become more of a family dynasty," said the ex-Jawi elected representative.

"Its leaders have become egoistic, arrogant and proud, and this attitude is prevalent in their administration as well," he added.

"After 10 years of ruling Penang, such attitudes have reached a chronic level," Tan said, adding DAP had even insulted a PKR rep, forgetting that the party had contributed 10 seats to the Pakatan Harapan government in the 13th national polls in 2013.

In a symbolic gesture, the former assemblyperson cut his membership card into pieces to show his severed ties with DAP and further handed 100 membership forms to PAP chairperson Zulkifli Mohd Noor (photo) and PAP vice-chairperson Rahmad Isahak.

PAP was formed by disgruntled DAP members in 2015 by former DAP national vice-chairperson Zulkifli Mohd Noor, who had served the party for 25 years.

Tan also said that he was also a victim of the "family dynasty" when his name was dropped from DAP candidate's list in the last poll and was replaced by current Jawi assemblyperson Soon Lip Chee (photo).

He noted that the same fate befell several other elected representatives in Penang, and warned that others may experience similar moves in the coming general election.

He was not provided any reason for the move, even when his supporters in Jawi still needed his services, Tan said.

He also cited DAP's top leaders' recent cooperation with former premier and Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad as a factor for members and supporters in the Chinese community to lose faith towards DAP.

"DAP is no longer a safe place for anyone in the long term if this family dynasty were to continue," said Tan. "Chinese voters must reconsider their support for DAP, think about their future generation instead of giving blind support to the party."

"The party plays too much politics until there is hardcore corruption where for the first time in history, a chief minister was charged (with) two counts of corruption".
