Malaysia will be exercising its Mutual Legal Assistance agreement with China to extradite six Malaysians reportedly arrested in Hong Kong Airport last Thursday while attempting to carry nearly HK$4 million (RM2 million) worth of ketamine into the city.

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi told reporters that Malaysian police will be working with their counterparts in Hong Kong to facilitate the return of the six suspects.

"Cooperation between PDRM and Hong Kong police will be translated through their repatriation, after the individuals have been handed over by the Hong Kong customs department to the police.

"The PDRM's narcotics department will investigate (them) and prepare investigation papers to be handed over to the Attorney-General's Chambers for charges under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act or other relevant provision," Zahid told a press conference after officiating Selangor Umno's convention at the party's headquarters.

Zahid, who is also Home Minister, stressed the government's commitment to crack down on drug-related offences involving Malaysians abroad or in the country.

"Actions will be taken against them," he said.

The South China Morning Post (SCMP) previously reported that the six men, aged between 18 and 28 years of age, were said to be part of a sightseeing group.

The report quoted a source who said the group were intercepted at the customs clearance counter upon arrival from Kuala Lumpur, with over 8kg of suspected ketamine found strapped to the bodies of four of them.

The haul had an estimated street value of HK$3.9 million.
