PARLIAMENT | Bung Moktar Radin (BN-Kinabatangan) has urged Putrajaya to emulate the Philippines' war on drugs by shooting drug traffickers.

He also proposed for the detention of drug addicts without trial.

"In the Philippines, the drug usage was scary at one time, but since the president (Rodrigo) Duterte took office, it is almost zero (incidents)...

"Why can't we follow the Philippines? Why not? We detain the drug addicts without trial, we shoot the drug traffickers," he said during the debate on Budget 2018.

Bung Moktar said the proposal stemmed from the fact that his constituency, along with several other areas in Sabah, had become hubs for drug traffickers.

At this juncture, Ramkarpal Singh (DAP-Bukit Gelugor) interjected and asked: "Are you serious? Do you believe the methods adopted by Filipinos? Do you support Duterte's move?"

"I am very serious. This is for the sake of the nation, we do not want the country filled with a group of weak, lifeless and idealess people.

"Like Yang Berhormat (the honourable MPs), who are not drug addicts, can interject (my debate), and like me. This is the future we want, not a group of weak drug addicts, murderers, thieves and traffickers.

"Shoot them, like what China did, and Philippines is now (a) great (country)," Bung responded.

He also said the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) should be dissolved as it had failed to tackle the drug scourge.

In his reply, Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed (BN-Pulai) dismissed Bung's suggestion, saying this goes against international norms. 

"We do not want to take an action that would impact human rights and if this is done in Malaysia, then there will be implications, which include economic sanctions, from international parties such as the United Nations," he said. 

He also told the House that the police in the Philippines no longer deal with drug-related matters, which has since been transferred to the anti-drug agency. 

Nur Jazlan also expressed his belief that Durterte made the decision due to the international pressure he faced from many world leaders over the drug-related shootings.
