Salahuddin Ayub, 44, hails from Pontian, Johor. He has been involved in politics for 25 years. He joined PAS in 1981 and quickly rose through the ranks. He is presently a member of parliament of Kubang Kerian, Kelantan. He is also the PAS Youth chief.

He has four sons and two daughters who are all based in Kuala Lumpur. He divides his time between party duties and serving his constituents in Kubang Kerian. He laments that he only gets to see his family once a week.

Salahuddin first received a diploma in Business studies from TAR college via a distance learning programme (1983), while he was working as a bank officer. He later completed a Bachelor of Science in Human Development from University Putra Malaysia in 2000. He hopes to complete his doctorate in politics before the age of 50.

Favourite football teams
For the World Cup tournament, I would support Brazil.

Favourite World Cup tournament
The most exciting World Cup for me would be 1974. There were many of my favourite players, such as Johan Cruyff (Holland), Gerd Mller (West Germany), Kevin Keagan (England), Roberto Bettega (Italy) and also Franz Beckenbauer (W Germany). I still remember clearly how West Germany beat Holland 2-1.

If Umno were to challenge PAS to a Futsal match, who would you field?
Myself, and my exco members - Mazlan Aliman, Hanipa Maidin, my deputy Idris Ahmad, and my secretary Sabki Yusoff.

Hobbies
Reading, especially management and politics.

Family make up
Four boys and two girls.

What were you doing on the eve of Merdeka 2005?
I was in Terengganu for a party function. We celebrated Merdeka day our way, through ceramah (political speech) to explain to people the meaning of Merdeka.

Did you fly the Malaysian flag on your car?
I have never done so before.

What mobile phone do you use?
A Nokia.

If your party superiors asked you to recruit Siti Nurhaliza, what would you do?
That's a very good question. Among the many artists in this country, I would consider Siti Nurhaliza a role model.

I will recruit her to help in problem solving among social ills among youngsters. She can play a role in taking part in many programmes that we have for youngsters.

What food do you like?
Kampung style.

Recommend a place to eat in Kelantan
Masakan ala Kampung in Kota Bharu.

If someone produces a calender with 12 politicians on it, who would you want to see on it?
Fidel Castro, Ghandhi, Khomemi, Fadzil Noor, Abdul Hadi Awang and Nasharudin Mat Isa.

No females?
Erm... (none) for now.

Talents you wished you had
Writing. Perhaps after I accomplish my job with PAS Youth, I could write books and articles.

In your opinion, who sleeps the most in parliament?
Certain MPs within Umno (sleep during parliamentary sittings). Some of them have no real ideas (what to do in Parliament) and were just fortunately selected as representatives.

Favourite music
I like to listen to sentimental music, such as Abba and Bay City Rollers. I also like nasyid groups such as Brothers and In-tim.

What's your reaction to recent high-profile weddings?
That is more on glamour and the fact that these men (the Sultan of Brunei and Azmi Khalid) have money.

On visits to your constituency, do you fly economy or business?
Economy. Sometimes, I travel by express bus.

What's the leg room like on economy?
(Laughs) For me its acceptable, because of the price of Air Asia flights.

There was a post-party-elections-party during the recent Gerakan AGM, where party president Dr Lim Keng Yaik was seen crooning and dancing on stage. How did PAS celebrate after the party elections last year?
We celebrate in a different way. It's called doa selamat (thanksgiving prayers). It was a quiet affair.

What car do you drive?
Honda CRV, that was bought in 1996.

Where is Ayah Pin?
Maybe up in the sky (laughs).

Who do you want to see interviewed for this column?
I hope to see my counterpart Hishammuddin (Hussein, Umno Youth chief) being interviewed.
