Prison authorities allegedly took three days to send jailed PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim to hospital following an accident, claimed his lawyers.

The lawyers said the delay following the accident while Anwar was being transported last Friday, was unexplained and unnecessary.

"This accident aggravated his current and pre-existing injuries in his right shoulder, neck and lower back, leading to continuing pain since then.

"Back in prison, Anwar was only given an injection and painkillers," the lawyers Sivarasa Rasiah, N Surendran and Latheefa Koya said in a statement today.

On Sept 22, Anwar was en route from Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) to the Sungai Buloh prison when the vehicle he was in was accidentally struck from behind by an escort car.

On the day of the accident, Sivarasa said the accident had left Anwar shaken, but that he did not suffer any serious injuries.

The lawyers however claimed that a doctor assigned to Anwar, who was reported to have checked on him that day at the prison, failed to give instructions for the Pakatan Harapan de facto leader to be taken back to hospital.

"It was only three days later, after suffering from severe pain and discomfort, that Anwar was brought to HKL," the trio said.

"Proper medical attention is the right of every imprisoned person. We have accordingly written to the ministers of home affairs and health seeking an explanation for this inexcusable failure," they added.

Malaysiakini is awaiting a response from the Health Ministry and the Prisons Department.

On another matter, Anwar is expected to make a court appearance later today for the decision on his defamation suit against Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.
