An MCA leader has accused DAP of resorting to gutter politics with regard to Liow Tiong Lai's Merdeka video.

Ti Lian Ker said the MCA president's video titled 'Citizens' contained a positive image but DAP turned it into something negative to sow hatred and divide the Chinese community.

Ti said the video, in which Liow is featured in a double role as “honest and powerful to the core, was strategically produced to send a reassuring message to Malaysians not to give up on Malaysia despite the government's mistakes”.

The MCA central committee member noted how Liow, in the video, conceded that mistakes were made, but at the same timed pointed out that it was not easy to govern Malaysia.

“The messages delivered were so powerful that DAP, whose political games are to create negative vibes, anti-establishment sentiments and hatred, found it fit for them to undermine and diminish the positive vibrations and messages therein,” he said in a statement.

Ti referred to the pro-DAP Facebook page, 'Nasi Lemak 2020', creating a parody video featuring Liow and his predecessor Dr Chua Soi Lek.

“It is obvious DAP cannot go beyond its political games of exploiting racial and religious divides. DAP's political culture is about creating a divide on the ground by exploiting differences and hate mongering,” he said.

However, Ti said when it suited them, DAP had no qualms in embracing its former nemeses, such as Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Anwar Ibrahim, Muhyiddin Yassin and Abdul Hadi Awang.

“Although the video 'Citizens' was straightforward, non-political and solely focused on the love for the nation in conjunction with our Independence Day, DAP twisted it into something to sow hatred, aiming to divide the nation.

“DAP is truly relying on gutter politics and dangerously exploiting divides to win votes, a display of immature politics,” he added.

At a time when politicians and political parties up their ante, Ti said, Liow's video was timely in reminding Malaysians not to give up hope or tear the nation apart.
