Come next May, MIC deputy president S Subramaniam is expected to be its next victim following a challenge by another party stalwart, vice-president G Palanivel.
The long-time party president S Samy Vellu has also indicated that he prefers Palanivel over his deputy for more than two decades.
There is also talk that Subramaniam may pull a 'Gerakan move' on the president and contest for the top post.
Today, Subramiam said that he would definitely defend his post.
"I'm firm in my decision to defend my post," he told reporters when met at the sidelines of the MCA annual general assembly in Kuala Lumpur.
However, the former domestic trade and consumer affairs deputy minister did not want to elaborate on the matter.
"The party elections are still 10 months away, still far away. No need for me to comment everyday," he was quoted as saying in a Bernama report.
He also brushed aside rumours that he would be gunning for presidency.
"I've already said before I will not go for the president's post but defend my post as deputy president," he said.
Party unity crucial
The MIC deputy president also applauded Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's speech at the MCA meet this morning on the importance of party unity.
Subramaniam said party unity must be maintained at all costs even in the face of elections.
In his opening address at the meet, Abdullah said even though there were elections for leadership positions among BN components, the party should always emerge victorious.
"This is a good message to all BN components. What's important the party must remain strong and solid, only then the BN can govern the nation efficiently," said Subramaniam.
In MCA, all the top posts, except for the Wanita chief, are being contested. Next Saturday, Gerakan could see its long term deputy president Kerk Choo Ting taking on his boss of nearly two decades Dr Lim Keng Yaik.
