Kedah PKR was not slighted by DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang's suggestion that the DAP be allowed to contest in two more state seats in Kedah that were previously contested by PKR.

Kedah PKR chief Dr Azman Ismail said the state PKR is always prepared to consider feedback from senior leaders within Pakatan Harapan.

"Yes, (Lim's suggestion) will be taken into account, Insya Allah," he told Malaysiakini when contacted.

Apart from being guided by principles of democracy, Azman said they were also guided by the "wisdom of party seniors".

"Lim is a senior. (So) we will discuss (and) we will also take into account the reality on the ground," he said.

Azman stressed that there were no hard feelings over Lim's proposal.

"Because that is part of the process of negotiations," he said.

Lim yesterday said that the DAP was eyeing the MCA-held Kulim and Gurun seats.

In the last general election, PKR lost both seats to the MCA.

Azman said seat negotiations in Kedah amongst Pakatan Harapan partners for the next general election were already ongoing.

"Discussions have progressed smoothly. In the near future... we will announce the result of the discussions.

"I wouldn't put a time frame (but) we have completed around 70 percent of the discussions," he said.

Azman explained the negotiations had started even before Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) joined the coalition.

He said changes were now being made to accommodate the new partner.

Representatives from all four parties, he said, were looking at "every angle" in relation to seat distribution.

'Discuss behind closed doors'

Meanwhile, PKR vice president Tian Chua said he hoped matters concerning seat negotiations will be done behind closed doors.

"We hope that all allies would return to the negotiation table and not discuss the seat negotiation in the media," he told Malaysiakini when contacted.

Chua said his advice is not targeted at any specific person but is meant for his party and all Harapan partners.

"We should not talk openly about strategies to avoid the media from portraying us negatively by claiming that we are fighting for the seats.

"This is not good for Harapan unity," he said.

In the 2008 general election, Pakatan Rakyat captured Kedah with PAS taking the bulk of the seats, at 16, while PKR captured four and DAP received one in the 36-member House.

However, the Pakatan lost the state in the 2013 general election with PAS only winning nine seats while PKR maintained its four seats and DAP increased its share to two seats.

Pakatan was subsequently dissolved and PAS is no longer part of the successor coalition Harapan.
