Barisan Nasional could risk losing Putrajaya if the government does not explain the problems plaguing 1MDB, said Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali today.

Azmin, who is also PKR deputy president, said he is confident of the maturity of voters in the state, in retaining the present administration, and it is Umno and BN who "should be worried".

Azmin was responding to Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor who said that BN must counter the perception created by the opposition on 1MDB to win back Selangor.

“Well, I suppose (Umno/BN) would not win Selangor but will have problems in defending Putrajaya if they fail to explain 1MDB.

“By Tengku Adnan bringing up the 1MDB issue, he recognises the need to gain the confidence of the rakyat towards Umno and BN," he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur court complex today.

He added that 1MDB was an important issue which needed to be explained by BN, and it was for that purpose, he was initiating the court action to get the IGP to bring back businessperson Jho Low, who is considered a central figure in the scandal.

Asked whether he was confident of retaining Selangor, Azmin who is also Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyperson, said he believed in the maturity of the Selangor people.

“They know what is right and wrong . I am also confident in the programmes that have been done in the state, and that we are clean and with integrity.

"Selangor has been able to manage the economy and finances in a transparent way since 2008, and I believe in the success of our programs,” he said.

Azmin, who was earlier present at PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim's defamation suit against Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar, also commented on the former opposition leader's meeting with former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad at the court complex today.

“There was a discussion on the future of Malaysia and how we can work together to form a more effective coalition.

“Anwar also expressed concern over the Nothing to Hide 2.0 incident and hoped police can take stern action. We (the Selangor government) will monitor the matter closely,” he said.

Azmin also downplayed his and PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail's meeting with PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.

“The meeting should not be politicised. We visited Hadi after he had successfully undergone an important (heart) surgery. Wan Azizah had wanted to meet Tuan Guru earlier but could not (do so) and prayed for his speedy recovery,” he said.

“We recognise that Hadi needs time to rest and this was just a visit and wishing him a speedy recovery,” he added.
