DOE: Haze clears, except for Miri

The haze appears to have stopped choking the country, except for Miri in Sarawak where the air quality is at an 'unhealthy' level.

According to a Bernama report, the Department of Environment (DOE) said that the Air Pollutant Index (API) reading in other areas were recorded as 'good' and 'moderate'.
As at 11 am, the API reading in Miri rose to an 'unhealthy' level of 116 compared to 69 at 5 pm yesterday, due to open burning in forest areas of Kalimantan and Sarawak.
At the same time, all areas in Sarawak including Sabah showed some increases in API but were still within the 'good' and 'moderate' categories.
Of the 51 API monitoring stations nationwide, 17 areas recorded API readings of 0-50 which is 'good' while 33 stations registered readings of 50-100 classified as 'moderate'.
The lowest was Kajang, which recorded an API reading of 31.
Five areas which registered unhealthy air quality levels yesterday afternoon, also recorded 'moderate' API readings at noon today.
They are Seri Manjung which is now at 68 compared with 151 yesterday, Sungai Petani 77 (103), Perai 80 (133), Kangar 83 (106) and Alor Setar 92 (112).
The API reading indicators are as follows: 0-50 good; 51-100 moderate; 101-200 unhealthy; 201-300 very unhealthy and above that category is hazardous to health.
Port Klang and Kuala Selangor which were placed under haze emergency last Thursday when their API readings breached 500, made a dramatic turnaround with API readings of 62 and 58 respectively.

Meanwhile, the DOE said it was unable to obtain the latest Asean Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC)'s satellite report on hotspots which caused the haze, due to the thick clouds in Sumatra.
However, 144 hotspots have been identified in Kalimantan, in addition to 13 in Sarawak, that is in Samarahan, Sri Aman and Sibu.
The DOE said Alor Setar, Chuping and Kota Baharu recorded visibility distance of up to 2 km.
Prai, Langkawi, Bayan Lepas, Butterworth and Setiawan registered visibility distance of between 4km and 6km while Kota Kinabalu up to 7 km.
The visibility distance in other areas exceeded 8 km.
