translation A student leader who had been held under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for nearly two weeks was released by police yesterday.

When contacted by malaysiakini, Mohamad Fuad Mohd Ikhwan said he was "fine" but declined to comment further.

Mohamad Fuad, who is the president of Universiti Malaya students representative council, said he was released unconditionally at 2.30pm yesterday at the Jalan Travers police station.

He is now back in his hometown in Johor.

On July 6, Mohamad Fuad was arrested in Kuala Lumpur under section 73(1) of the ISA which permits indefinite detention without trial.

Room ransacked

A day before that, a student leader from Institut Kemahiran Mara (IKM), Khairul Anuar Ahmad Zainuddin, known as Jonah among his friends, was arrested under the same Act.

Khairul was arrested at the Dang Wangi police station when he accompanied six students to make a police report in connection with an anti-ISA demonstration held a week earlier at the National Mosque.

Police also ransacked Khairul's rented room in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, and confiscated his computer, several printed articles and video compact dics related to the reformasi movement.

Khairul's family was allowed to visit him at the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman last Saturday.
