Schools suspend classes

With the Air Pollutant Index (API) considered 'hazardous' or 'unhealthy' in several areas in Selangor, the state Education Department has directed all schools in the state to suspend outdoor activities with immediate effect.

According to Johari Mohd Noh, the department's Public Relations Unit head, it will wait for further instructions from the Education Ministry on whether the school should suspend classes as well.
Meanwhile, the Star reported that all schools in Kuala Lumpur will be closed tomorrow and Friday.
Kuala Lumpur education department director Noor Rezan Bapoo Hashim said scores of students were rushed to hospital for breathing difficulties today.
She said the schools would have to replace their days off
with classes on two Saturdays next month.
As of 12pm, the API readings in Shah Alam (316), Kuala Selangor (327) and Port Klang (410) led worried parents to fetch their children home or to see the doctor for haze-related complications.
Johari said parents were permitted to do so but they would have to obtain permission from the school.
He also said that students facing respiratory problems in school would be sent to the clinic for treatment.
It is learnt that many parents in Klang, the worst affected area in the state, have brought their children home from school because of the worsening situation today.
Contacted this morning, Port Klang Authority chairperson Yap Pian Hon said the port was operating as usual but the haze slowed down operations at the North Port and West Port at 3pm yesterday. However, operations returned to normal at around 5.30 pm.
Memo to DOE
DAP Sungai Pinang assemblyperson Teng Chang Khim (right) urged the Education Ministry to stop classes in Klang immediately because of the hazardous situation.
The Consumer Association of Klang and the Selangor Environment Association said they will submit a memorandum to the Department of Environment (DOE) to request for the API to be made public.
Spokesperson John Millsom said the public have the right to know the API as their health is at stake.
The association, he added, has received numerous calls from the public complaining about the haze in the Klang valley.
