Sarawak BN has yet to decide on which component party will contest in the upcoming Pujut by-election, to be held on July 4.

"Whether it is Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) or United People’s Party (UPP), we will leave it (the choice of candidate) to the chief minister to decide.

"To me personally, it is not about UPP or SUPP; it is the ability of the candidate to win. I think it is very crucial for us to win the by-election," Sarawak BN secretary-general Stephen Rundi said.

The Sarawak minister of utilities also added that the state BN had reached a consensus that the seat has to be given to the Chinese community.

Speaking to Malaysiakini after the breaking of fast event at Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) with the Sarawakian diaspora, Rundi added the final decision about the BN candidate lies in the hands of Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg.

Rundi also mentioned that the injunction filed by DAP's Ting Tiong Choon on June 9 will be decided on June 19, a day before the nomination day on June 20.

"Well, in any election, we have to go in with confidence. Otherwise, there is no point. We are confident and we have to convince them of what is good for the people in Miri.

We hope that the people will support BN whoever the candidate is," he said.

Ting was disqualified as Pujut state assemblyman on May 12 because he allegedly held Australian citizenship.

The disqualification is in accordance with Article 17(1)(g) of the Sarawak constitution, which states that any person who willingly obtains foreign citizenship or exercises the rights of a foreign citizen will be disqualified from being a state assemblyperson.

Ting won the seat in the last Sarawak state election with a majority of 1,759 votes in a four-cornered fight with BN's Hii King Chiong, PAS' Jofri Jeraiee and independent candidate Fong Pau Teck, who was the incumbent.
