Jailed PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim has expressed doubt over the reasoning behind PAS' move to cut ties with his party. 

Anwar said the reasoning that PKR had not supported PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's move to amend syariah penal laws, was "inaccurate". 

"It's clear the PAS leadership did not properly read the statements by myself and the PKR president (Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail) that respected Hadi's right (to push for the amendments) and proposed for it to be referred to a parliament select committee,"Anwar said in a statement today. 

Alleged failure to support Hadi's amendments was one of the reasons cited by PAS' syura council when it officially severed ties with PKR on Thursday. 

The move seeks to enhance the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act, to increase punishment for syariah offences up to 30 years jail, RM100,000 fine, and 100 strokes of the cane.

Anwar highlighted how Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had said the government would not be adopting the bill on its own.

"Oddly, Umno was not blamed this time," he said.

Anwar was referring to Najib's announcement in April that Putrajaya would not be taking over Hadi's bill, following objections by BN component parties. 

While some PAS leaders such as deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man have said that this is proof Umno can't be relied on to uphold Islam, Hadi has said that PAS was grateful to the government. 

This is because the government had cleared all its businesses on the last day of Parliament in April, allowing Hadi to read out his motion to table the bill.

Anwar said PKR had never betrayed its cooperation with PAS, and that its objective was clear - to oust the corrupt Umno-BN government. 

Meanwhile on Selangor, the former opposition leader expressed confidence that Menteri Besar Azmin Ali will continue heading the state government.
