Despite MCA Wanita endorsing the incumbent chairperson and her protege for the deputy slot, a contest still appears to be on the cards.

In a negotiation meeting last Saturday, its central committee endorsed incumbent chairperson Dr Ng Yen Yen to continue leading the wing while it named organising secretary Chew Mei Fun as deputy.

However, this did not go down well with everyone.

Chew, is expected to be challenged by Kelana Jaya division MCA Wanita chairperson, Ong Chong Swen.

Ong is a close ally of suspended MCA Wanita deputy chairperson Dr Tan Yee Kew (pix). The latter was handed a six-month suspension recently after being found guilty of breaching party ethics.

Following this, Tan who was also Selangor MCA Wanita chief, was disqualified from contesting any posts in the party elections.

Chew replaced her as the new Selangor Wanita chief.

Tan had also failed in her attempt to challenge Ng for presidency in the last party polls six years ago.

Contacted today, Ong declined to confirm whether she will take on Chew but stated that she had to consider 'the will of the grassroots'.

"I won't answer this question (whether to contest for deputy president) at the moment. But I will certainly contest for central committee member," she said.

She also dismissed the possibility that she will go for broke and take on Ng for the top post.

Last week, Nanyang Siang Pau reported that Ong might challenge the chairperson as she was seen to be the catalyst behind Tan's suspension.

Meanwhile, Ong said the current MCA Wanita leadership acted like a 'guardian' wielding excessive powers over its members.

"Since the elections is part of democracy, Wanita members should be allowed to contest in any posts," she added.

A party source said members who were unhappy with the 'menu'(decided list of candidates) revealed, will not allow the wing's top posts to go uncontested.

"They might be some others who would take on Ng or Chew," she said.

On the other hand, Chew declined to comment much regarding the potential contest.

"I will closely monitor the development," she said, adding that any challenge should be seen as part and parcel of democracy.

The party central delegates conference will be held on August 20 while the Youth and Wanita delegates conference is slated a day earlier.
