The Immigration Department has not yet traced the location of 69 biometric systems procured by the Home Ministry to process immigrants, a report by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) revealed.

The missing Sagem biometric readers, were among 200 devices procured by the Home Ministry for RM10.3 million in 2010 - originally for the Malaysian Immigration System (myIMMS)

The 2015 Auditor-General’s Report states that the biometric devices were paid for and procured, but never installed at the nation's entry points.

In the PAC report tabled today, the Home Ministry explained that the devices were not installed at immigration entry points because the Sagem reader was incompatible with the existing system.

The readers were hence moved to passport offices.

In a section on latest developments, the PAC report states that the Immigration Department has identified the location of 131 of the Sagem readers, while the remaining 69 were still being traced.

It is not clear when or how the readers were misplaced.

The PAC in its recommendations urged the Home Ministry to lodge a police report if the biometric systems could not be found.

"(The Home Ministry) must also carry out a detailed investigation and take strict action against those responsible for the missing (readers)," the PAC report said.
