Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) supreme council member Muhammad Faiz Na'aman has blamed PAS for the failed talks between the two parties to hammer out a pact for the 14th general election.

"There were different stances by PAS leaders with regard to negotiations with Bersatu, as if there were two factions in PAS.

"One faction, through its deputy president (Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man), wanted peace with Bersatu while another, led by the PAS president (Abdul Hadi Awang), was against cooperation with Bersatu," he said in a statement.

Muhammad Faiz's salvo came after PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan blamed Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad for the failed talks, claiming that the former prime minister had veto powers over decisions made.

Muhammad Faiz stressed that all decisions within Bersatu were made based on consensus by the supreme council or presidential council.

"There is no dictator in Bersatu. What is his source (of information) in accusing Mahathir of having veto power in Bersatu?

"The negotiations between PAS and Bersatu were plagued with problems from the beginning because of several factors, the majority of which were due to PAS leadership," he said.

He said when Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin announced PAS had agreed to seat negotiations with Bersatu following discussions with Tuan Ibrahim, this was immediately contradicted by other PAS leaders.

Muhammad Faiz went on to list out several other issues throughout the negotiations, including PAS president Abdul Hadi's refusal to attend the talks even though the Bersatu team was led by Muhyiddin.

"It showed the lack of commitment or perhaps arrogance of the PAS leadership - that it was not serious in the negotiations between Muslims.

"Perhaps the PAS leadership thought that the Bersatu president's status was not the same as PAS president's," he said.

Muhammad Faiz noted that during the negotiations, several PAS leaders including Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz, Mohd Amar Abdullah, Nasruddin Hassan, Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali, Mohd Zuhdi Marzuki and even Hadi himself repeatedly attacked the Bersatu chairperson.

He lamented that PAS could not comprehend the concept of a "ceasefire" during negotiations.

Furthermore, he said talks were also made difficult with PAS imposing the condition on Bersatu to choose between PAS or Pakatan Harapan.

He added that this was despite Bersatu's efforts to unite the entire opposition.

"Now, it is up to the people to evaluate which party was the one that had complicated the negotiations despite three meetings between Bersatu and PAS negotiation teams which fail to yield any concrete results.

"Bersatu's stance now is to postponed further formal talks with PAS until PAS formally makes a decision at its muktamar in April," said Muhammad Faiz.
