On the heels of the prime minister's remarks on Sunday labeling some Chinese education groups as "extremists", Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today gave his assurance the government had never denied the rights of non-Malays, be they supporters of Barisan Alternatif (BA) or Barisan Nasional (BN).
"Although the government has extended help to the Malays in certain matters through special privileges, the country's policies are for the people; not BN's or Umno's, but for the country in the interest of the people and their progress," Abdullah said in Lunas, Kedah.
On Sunday, to reporters' questions on influential Chinese education group Dong Ziao Zong's involvement in the Opposition's campaign in Lunas, Dr Mahathir Mohamad had accused such groups of being ungrateful to the government whom they had approached for aid many times.
The Star quoted the prime minister as saying, "We helped them and this is their way of saying thank you. This is what we get from this group of Chinese extremists."
Abdullah clarified that "the Chinese in Malaysia have been enjoying their rights which have never been brushed aside by the government," adding that he had met two groups of Chinese residents in Lunas to explain in detail the government's concern for the Chinese community.
Increasing support
Asked how confident he was of a win for BN's candidate S Anthonysamy who will be challenged by BA Keadilan's Saifudin Nasution Ismail and Independent candidate N Letchumanan, he said that feedback from a few areas indicated there was increasing support for BN.
He said though he wasn't sure how it compared with voters' sentiments during last year's general elections.
Tomorrow is polling day for the Lunas by-election state seat which fell vacant following the murder of incumbent BN's Dr Joe Fernandez from MIC on Nov 4.
