DAP has started a campaign to urge four million Malaysians, who are eligible to vote in the coming election, to register themselves as voters.

The campaign was initiated after the party noticed a drastic drop in the number of new voters registration after the 2013 general election. 

According to DAP publicity secretary Tony Pua, Election Commission's (EC) numbers revealed that 1.02 million people registered as new voters in 2011 while only a total of 617,000 did so from 2013 to 2015.

"This is an average of 206,000 a year (between 2013 and 2015), a massive decline," he said at a press conference today.

"The newly qualified voters increase by 500,000 per year, which means that the unregistered voters would increase faster than registered voters." 

Pua urged them not to give up their right to vote as the next general election is just around the corner .

"We expect the next election to be held after September.

"To get yourself to vote in the coming election, you have to register before the end of March," he said, adding that the EC will take five to six months to complete the registration process for new voters.

"This is the last call for boarding. If you are not satisfied with the government, change is in your hand."

Also present were DAP Kulai MP Teo Nie Chieng and Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun.

Pua said voters are unhappy that the opposition is fragmented, but this is not something which can be helped when one party decided to leave and be friendly with Umno.

"There are people who still want to persuade PAS to join (us), hence there is no certainty. Voters don't like uncertainty and we need to address this soon.

"One of the biggest challenges is empathy. They (voters) don't care. If you are not voting, you are ensuring the BN regime's continued hold on power," he said.
