There will be continued clashes between PAS and DAP as the two opposition parties have nothing in common, deputy prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said today.

The only common thing that PAS and DAP had, he said, was probably their hatred towards Barisan Nasional.

"Otherwise, they have nothing in common. I do not understand how they can still be friends as they continue to clash on the same issues," he told reporters after officiating the Malaysian Telecommunications Contractors Association's 10th annual general meeting at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur this morning.

Abdullah added that if both PAS and DAP were far-sighted, the two parties should realise that they would not be able to work together and garner the people's support.

He noted that the component parties in BN have no problems working together.

Abdullah, who is also the Home Minister, was commenting on the ongoing conflict between PAS and DAP on the persistence of some PAS leaders, particularly Terengganu Mentri Besar Abdul Hadi Awang, in setting up an Islamic state if PAS comes into power.

DAP, which wants a secular state, has called on PAS to leave the opposition coalition. It said that PAS' decision made the front - which includes Keadilan and Parti Rakyat Malaysia - no longer tenable.
