An agreement between PAS and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) will lead to stronger ties between opposition parties, said Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin.

"Bersatu before this signed an agreement with Pakatan Harapan and this cooperation will continue.

"This agreement reached with PAS will complete efforts to creating a political pact between opposition parties, and InsyaAllah (God willing), strengthen the opposition's position, come the 14th general election," Muhyiddin said in a statement today.

Muhyiddin is also praying that he can ink an agreement with PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang within the next few days.

However, a PAS strategist did not appear to share the same optimism.

"There is still a long way to go," said PAS research centre director Mohd Zuhdi Marzuki.

PAS and Bersatu held a closed-door meeting yesterday in which the two agreed to form a joint technical committee to hash out a cooperative framework for the next polls.

Bersatu has been looking to convince PAS to compete in straight fights against BN in the next elections.

However, PAS is in disagreement with Bersatu's allies in Pakatan Harapan, namely its splinter party Amanah and DAP.

Amanah and PAS are widely expected to contest against each other.

Meanwhile, Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been butting heads with PAS, saying the opposition did not need them.

Mahathir had previously singled out Mohd Zuhdi as being among the individuals trying to sabotage cooperation talks between PAS and Bersatu.
