DAP today hit out at PAS Ulama information chief Khairuddin Aman Razali for "distorting facts" when he accused its party supremo Lim Kit Siang of confusing consensus with majority rules during their time as allies in the now defunct Pakatan
Rakyat.

Khairuddin was defending PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang from accusations that it was the Islamic party that broke consensus and triggered the dissolution of the coalition.

"He (Khairuddin) said, only matters unanimously agreed upon by all parties could be treated as Pakatan Rakyat agenda. A fact that none of us dispute.

"He further accused DAP and PKR for breaking up due to the two parties’ failures to adhere to the consensus principle. He is free to assert his theory, however false and inaccurate that maybe according to facts.

"It is most shocking that in his eagerness to defend Hadi Awang, Khairuddin was prepared to resort to the tactic of fact distortion," said party vice-chairperson Teresa Kok in a statement.

Kok argued that while DAP and Lim know very well and agree what consensus is, it is Khairuddin who is confused or is intentionally ignoring the fact that it was Hadi who broke the Pakatan Rakyat consensus.

This was on the matter of submitting candidates for the post of Selangor Menteri Besar after then MB Khalid Ibrahim was removed in August 2014 following his sacking from PKR.

"From Khairuddin’s statement, it is likely that he was not told about the truth on what had transpired at Pakatan Rakyat presidential council meetings, i.e. the ‘consensus’ was the appointment of (PKR president) Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the Selangor MB.

"Or could it be that he was aware, but in order to blindly support Hadi, he was prepared to distort the facts?

"A fact that cannot be distorted is that PAS had made a u-turn on the appointment of Wan Azizah as the Selangor MB," said Kok.

Kok related that the Pakatan Rakyat presidential council meeting, where PAS was represented by its then deputy president Mohd Sabu and secretary-general Mustafa Ali
came to a consensus to submit only Wan Azizah's name to the palace, in 2014.

"That was a consensus decision of Pakatan Rakyat which ought to be respected by the coalition members, but Hadi - not present at the meeting - chose to veto it. To what end, we can all see now unfolded by history.

"How could Khairuddin make such irresponsible comment, falsely asserting that DAP and PKR were the ones causing the break-up of Pakatan Rakyat when it is so clear that Hadi was the main cause?" she asked.

The fact of the matter as detailed above shows that the breakup was due to none other than Hadi’s unilateral decision and not DAP's understanding of the difference between consensus and majority rules.

"Resorting to fact distortion will win no argument and will not convince anyone," she concluded.
