More flood evacuees in Kelantan and Terengganu were allowed to return home today, as a result of improving weather condition.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department reported the fine weather forecast in most parts of the country, including in the East Coast states, indicating that more victims would be allowed to return home soon.

In Kelantan as of noon, the number of victims dropped to 10,783 people as compared to 12,064 this morning.

According to the Social Welfare Department's application, infobanjir, 20 evacuation centres were still open to accommodate evacuees in Pasir Mas, Tumpat and Pasir Puteh.

Pasir Mas recorded the highest number of victims at 6,741 from 2,608 families which have been placed at 12 evacuation centres, followed by Tumpat with 4,015 people.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, in his visit today to Sekolah Kebangsaan Bunohan in Tumpat, Kelantan said the government would study a proposal that a bridge be built at Jalan Kasban in Kampung Nibong, Tumpat to resolve the issue of stagnant flood waters occurring during the monsoon season in the area. 

He said the construction of the bridge would enable a channel to be provided to rapidly drain flood waters from the Pengkalan Kubur area to Sungai Golok. 

In Terengganu, the last evacuation centre in Setiu, namely Kampung Nyatoh Surau was closed this morning. This saw a decrease in the number of evacuees at 1,372 people as of 1pm, as compared to 1,473 this morning. 

A total of 337 families are still sheltered at seven evacuation centres in three districts, namely Kuala Terengganu, Marang and Dungun.

In Kuala Terengganu, the number of victims remained unchanged at 1,199 from 286 families since this morning, while in Dungun, 73 victims had returned home, leaving only 135 victims from 39 families housed at two evacuation centres, namely the Paka Civic Hall and SK Durian Mentangau.
