Anwar's freedom bid quashed

The apex court dismissed PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim's review of the Sodomy II conviction and sentence. With this, he is expected to remain in jail until mid-2018, to serve the remaining 16 months in his five-year sentence.

Undaunted, Anwar said his bid for freedom will continue, despite failing to overturn the Federal Court's decision to convict him. "I will discuss with my lawyers on the next possible course of action through the legal process," he said.

Regardless of the court verdict, Anwar's wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail urged supporters to continue with PKR's struggle for justice.

Former political aide Saiful Bukhari Azlan, who was Anwar's accuser in the Sodomy II case, felt vindicated by the Federal Court decision. "As the complainant, I hope and pray that this will mark the end of all legal proceedings," he wrote in his blog.

Harapan-Bersatu needs PAS

Pakatan Harapan and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) need to get PAS on board if they want a better chance to beat BN in the next general election, analysts say.

Some counseled Bersatu to make the move to approach PAS and play the

long game despite the mixed signals it is receiving, for the cold if cordial relations now may turn warm in the future when presently Umno-friendly president Abdul Hadi Awang no longer leads the Islamic party.

In any case, Anwar welcomed news that Bersatu has formalised working relations with Harapan. However, he said all the parties involved have much work ahead.
